German Chocolate Brownies

The brownie recipe I posted earlier this week was so good, I just couldn't stop there. I decided to make it again, and this time I topped the brownies with some homemade German Chocolate frosting.

Bestideaever.

Truly, these are incredible.  The sweetness of the frosting cuts the richness of the brownies perfectly and the pecans put these brownies over the top.  These are better brownies by FAR than I have ever purchased at a bakery or restaurant.

The frosting is delicious on brownies, but it is equally wonderful on dark chocolate cupcakes as well.  Want to make a fantastic German Chocolate cake?  Use this frosting to top a Devil's Food cake.

German Chocolate Brownies
Frosting recipe from Joy of Cooking

-9x13 pan brownies, prepared  (You can also use a box mix if you wish)

Frosting:
-1 cup sugar
-1 cup heavy cream
-3 large egg yolks (you can discard the whites)
-1 stick butter (1/2 cup), cut into small pieces
-1 1/3 cups flaked sweetened coconut
-1 1/3 cups chopped pecans (no need to toast)
Cook first 4 ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened and bubbling gently around the edges.  Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring, for about 2 minutes more.
Remove pan from heat and stir in coconut and pecans.
Let frosting cool until spreadable.  It will set up thicker in the fridge, so if it's too runny, pop it in there for an hour or two before using to frost brownies.
